About Us
The Engine Room has grown from a desire to create world-class theatre in Wigan.
Led by ThickSkin, Wigan’s own award winning theatre company, it is a creative space where new theatre, dance and performance are made — supporting artists while opening the door for local audiences and communities to connect with new work as it develops.
This is where ideas are put to work
The Engine Room was born from a need for space to create world-class theatre and to give artists in the North West a welcoming place to develop new work.
Based in Wigan’s historic Trencherfield Mill, it transforms an industrial landmark into a working creative space — a hub of imagination and expression where ideas are tried out, rehearsed and shaped into new theatre and performance.
Driven by ThickSkin, Wigan’s award-winning theatre company, The Engine Room is built around the practical work of making theatre and performance. Artists are supported with rehearsal space, technical facilities and professional expertise, giving them the time and focus needed to develop ambitious ideas from the ground up.
ThickSkin develops all of its productions at The Engine Room before touring nationally. Known for bold, stylish theatre made in collaboration with leading artists, the company’s presence means local audiences can experience high-quality, affordable new work in Wigan — often before it is seen anywhere else in the country.
Alongside ThickSkin’s work, The Engine Room supports independent artists and artist-led companies to develop new projects. The space also opens its doors for occasional performances, sharings, workshops and creative activities, offering local people opportunities to see what’s being made and get involved along the way. Rooted in Wigan’s creative heritage and looking firmly to the future, The Engine Room helps put the town on the map as a place where new work begins.
The Engine Room is supported by Arts Council England, Forging the Future and Wigan Council.
